NDI and Dante

NDI and Dante

by Michael Aschbacher - Number of replies: 3

Reading through the docs site, theres a specific note:

There are some known network protocols and applications that directly interfere with NDI- the most notable one being Audinate’s popular AVoIP protocol Dante. When Dante and NDI are used on the same network, it’s generally recommended that they both operate on their own VLAN

Does anyone have a more technical answer on what about Dante directly interferes with NDI?

Hi Michael,

Can you send a link to the page in the documentation where you found this information?

I'm not sure about DanteAV (not worked with it), but if you are talking about Dante audio, mixing it with NDI can work together, but up to a point.

Smaller configurations will probably work okay when mixed, but as the number of NDI and/or Dante audio devices increase, at some size they will probably not work well together. One of the issues is that Dante is highly dependent on its clock, typically Dante recommends that you run your network with QoS enabled, which put a lot of Dante traffic at higher priority than NDI. As expected, NDI is much higher bandwidth than Dante audio, so once you start running more video streams (especially if they are higher resolution and framerates) it can cause issue with Dante's critical timing requirements. When you reach this point, you will likely need to separate NDI and Dante onto separate networks. It's hard to pin down exactly when you would run into issues on a mixed network, but in general I recommend a separate network for NDI and Dante when possible.
